is there anything that you can use as a crude lathe? You cut down a bunch of trees and turn their trunks into measuring devices. then take them to lowes and buy the right ladder.

I have a good turning lathe. i could cut a tree and bore holes through it at 12 inch intervals and then split it perpendiculat to the holes and put in rungs to make a ladder and see if it was long enough. If it wasn't I could cut a taller tree and try again. There is always a way.

Turn all of the lights off except one. Then measure the shadow of a yard stick. Then its just a simple proportionality.

It's a good thing that we all don't charge for consulting or you would have a $1000 bill for sure. There sure has been a lot of thinking on this project.

I especially like Frank's (caguy) suggestion of the yardstick and shadow length. No thinking inside the box for him.....

I am surprized that no one suggested checking the wattage of the light and then measuring the luminus intensity at the floor and calculating the distance based on the inverse cube of the intensity versus the distance.

This is an easy one. Hire someone else to do it and don't stand under the ladder.
