Alright I dunno if anyone does this or not so I thought I might ask. Me and my girlfriend are wanting to travel to Australia, we are willing to work on a sailboat or yacht in exhange for the ride down. Does anyone know if and where this is availible? We have any sailing experience but we are willing to learn. I have my marine emergency duties but thats about it. Thanks for any help. Dustin

dustin... re: Crew list

This forum may not be the best source of info for what you guys have in mind. However, your question intrigued me. After all, what sailor hasn't wanted to pick up and sail off across the sea to some exotic place. Here is a suggested strategy to find your ride. (I'm sure you've done a lot of these things already or you wouldn't have found this forum but maybe there's something you haven't thought of) First, scour the library and bookstores for anything related to crewing or cruising. Second, run a google search. I just ran one with "crew list sailing yachting" and found a number of resources. Check them all out and start corresponding. Third, learn to sail! Fourth, learn to be a good crew. you can do this by getting on some crew lists at the local yacht clubs and sailng publications. Take a cruising class at the local college or sailing school. Read some books on being a good crewmate. Fifth, inventory any skills you have that make you an more valuable crewmate, such as first aid, mechanics, cooking, entertaining, language, etc. Also... make a very detailed personality assessment... know yourself. Sixth, Advertise yourself. Let everyone down at the yacht club or marine store know that you are looking for a ride. Get your name on internet crew lists. Respond to all "skippers looking for crew" ads. In SoCal the local rag is called Santana, in the SF Bay area I think it's called Latitude 38..... Hey... have a good time... I envy your spirit of adventure.

Go to Cruisersforum.com

Cruisers Forum has a place to post crew intentions and captains looking for crew. Good luck to both of you...

in response to joe in missiion bay...those two mag

magazines can be picked up at most west marine stores. Usually just before summer I see the crew lists in the mags. People lookin to crew.. people lookin for crew.. so, you should find something in there.

and they're FREE too!

However, since Dustin lives in the Pac NW I'll bet there's a similar publication ... regarding West Marine... the big stores in San Diego, Newport Beach and Long Beach have a pretty good size bulletin board where I've seen skippers looking for crew for South Pacific passages... problem is they're usually looking for the FEMALE type, or experienced sailors.
