MD6B - Why won't it start?

Hi Frank

You must be careful if you do this and ensure you fit at least two gaskets as
they are much thinner than the original ones. I had the same problem when I
had
an MD6A and the decompression lever was being help open as the gasket was too
thin. Easy to fix but be aware.

How's it going Frank, great to see you at the IFR even if it meant there were
two goddam yanks there! I had a greast trip back to Copenhagan but had a day
of gales with very big seas that did not impress me at all! Still all in a
day's sailing.....

Diana, John Vaughan and Ross Dring have now reached Ijumuiden and hope to be
back in the UK (Medway) in the next two days, a short hop of 160 miles to
go...

Have fun and hope your Vega arrives soon.

Only problem with almost all the Vegas with MD6A or MD7A is that the tranny
(gearbox) is the infamous COMBI and the only boat to ever use them was the
Vega
and the worth is almost nothing. I know as I have five of them on my workbench
in my garage.

The following article appeared in the August edition of Practical Boat Owner (a British magazine), I thought it might be of interest to the group.

"My experience with a Volvo MD6B might help other readers. Over two seasons it gradually became more difficult to start but always fired up from cold. The problem was solved one day when starting with the rocker cover off. Instant start! The rocker cover had distorted just enough to allow the de-compressor shaft to open the exhaust valves when cold. After a suitable thump I fitted two new, thicker, gaskets and everything was fine. Incidentally, an earlier investigation revealed a 6mm diameter nhole in the wall of an exhaust port to sea water cooling jacket. I stuffed it with a mixture of Spectra and Araldite, baked over the cooker to over 100°C (212°F) and flushed down in the port. It was still going strong three years later. FYI.

As some of you may know, I just parted out the old
MD7A that was in my 9.2C S2, and sold the tranny on
Ebay.I was informed by 2 different sources that rebuilt
transmissions for these older Volvo Pentas have been
going for quite a bit of money....well over a couple
of thousand dollars. Of course, I found this out after selling the tranny,
but thats ok. It went to a marina who does VP repair.
I was sort of hoping it would end up directly sold to
another boat owner who was in need, that was the main
focus of the exercise, since it was in very good
shape.Supposedly, one was recently sold by a rebuilder to a
boat owner, for over $3000.00.So if you have old Volvo Penta trannys that are in
good shape, they can be quite valuable if you can find
a buyer who wants to keep with original.Just an FYI, as I know some on the list are
repowering. the throw aways might be of more value
than expected. On the flip side, one person just
bought an entire, good running MD7A, with tranny, for
$250.00.Jeff__________________________________________________

Dear Jeff,

By chance I read your message.

I wonder whether you are Mr Jeff Johnson of Houston Tx, married to Lily.

I the past we used to sail in your Vega in Galveston Bay, we met also in
our home in Naarden when you were visiting Shell haeadquarter in The Hague.

Please advise,

Dear Henk,

Been to Houston, and liked the town, but not from
there! And the only Lily I've known was a dark haired
little gal in high school, quite a person she was.

But I'm a Michigander from Michigan.

By the by, does anybody want a crankshaft and the guts
from an MD7A really cheap?

Scrap heap by Saturday for sure otherwise. Tired of
that green chunky look on the back porch. I put em
back on ebay for a last have at it, but no takers yet.

If they don't sell, the first offer to pay shipping
and a case of pale ale, or a couple of bottles of some
local Merlot, gets all the remains!

Best Regards,

Jeff

Dear Jeff,

Sorry I have made a mistake. I was just guesstimating.

My Vega is equipped with a well working MD6 Volvo Penta engine .
I have two suggestion for your spare parts.

First why donot you advertise it in the bulletine of the American Vega
Association?

Second , the only shipyard in The Netherlands that still handles Vega's
and its engines is a Mr Henny de Bruyn in Weesp.

If you give me a discription of what you have in stock I can forward it
to him and ask him whether he is interested.

Of course the shipping cost to Holland might be a serious obstacle.

Kindest regards,

Henk Jansen

Thanks for the kind suggestions, but the parts now
reside in the dumpster.

Just not worth the hassle. And at $0.05 per pound for
scrap iron, its not even worth taking the steel parts
and the block to the recycler.

These type of parts arent' worth anything, until
somebody needs them. And right now, nobody needs
them. I am out of storage space for some parts that
someday, somebody, might need. So, off they have gone
to that great resting place where ever dead Volvo
Penta parts go...(probably Valhalla...lol), may they
rest in peace, and cause no one else the angst they
have caused me!Best Regards to All!Jeff
