MD6A

Hello Victor:

Another input. I had been having problems with my MD6A for two years. My
problems were similar, but not identical to, yours. My engine would start quite
easily and run OK for a minute or so, then slow down all by itself. Then, a few
seconds later it would return to the original speed. This cycle would
continue as long as I ran it. Also, as it increased in speed, it would put out black
smoke, but as it slowed down, it would put out gray smoke.

I finally removed the head and had it worked; cleaning and grinding the
valves and seats, and removing the carbon from the combustion chamber in the head
as well as the piston top. That solved the problem It now runs as well as the
day it was born. The work on the head cost me about $70.00 (US) plus the
gasket set, which was about $60.00. Volvo markets a "decarbonizing" gasket set.

The head was not difficult to remove and reinstall at all. I followed the
shop manual explicitly when putting it back together, especially the tightening
sequence of the head bolts. (Actually, they are nuts being tightened on studs
that are anchored in the block.)

Good luck. I hope this helps.

Smooth sailing.

I\'ve been experiencing problems with the MD6A while in heavy seas ,it seams to lose power and start heating and stall. When the sea is calm it can turn flawlessly for hours. I\'ve check if the fuel tank was clean ,pumping all the fuel and it seem o.k. I have also look if the vent for the fuel tank was blocked ,o.k. too. Maby one of the pump is tired and works to hard in heavy seas.I have three pumps one electrical the secondary on the engine before the fuel filter, and the fuel injection one.could it be the timming on the third one ? The injectors ? It\'s wird because the engine fires up effortlessly and turns like a charm.
It\'s not that I use the engine a lot, I\'d rather be sailing ... but it is reassuring to have a reliable engine espacialy where I sail; big tide currents and lots of rocks .If you have any ideas of what to do ,where to look, please contact me you\'d be more then welcome.

Merci beaucoup

I can't comment on the fuel problems, but I can comment on the heating problem.
And if you are lucky, fixing the heating problem may fix the engine...

Anyway, I put in a post to this message board at the end of last summer. If you search this yahoo albin vega group messages, you should find it. I put in a complete description of the procedure I used. I did not invent the procedure, i just researched and did it to my MD6A.

It's been working fine. In fact, maybe a little too cool now. I can't get the engine hot enough no matter what i do. Maybe need a bit hotter thermostat.

Oh, just remembered...
I also changed out my water pump and installed a groco inlet water strainer to prevent sand from getting into the engine. If you get into shallow water and stir up the bottom, your engine will pick up the particles.

You can't buy the exact johnson water pump anymore, but there is a replacement part. You have to buy 2 little wing pieces for the pedistal bottom as this new unit is round and not winged like the old one.

Anybody know the weight with/without running gear? I know this is an old engine but what is the general consensus? Thoughts?  Thanks Gordon
