MD6A: blockage in water cooling system

Hi all.
I just replaced impellor (removing old impellor was very difficult using
the "two screwdrivers" method.)

I found some bits of rubber from old impellor in pump chamber but some
have gone south into exhaust system.

I was prompted to check impellor by the trickle of water at the exhaust.
I reckon about a litre/minute (measured using a tin can) at mid revs.

The engine does not seem to be overheating but does get hot if run at
high revs for 15 minutes with boat tied up. (My heat gauge is bust so
have to rely on putting my hand on engine head.)

Should there be a a regular gush of water from exhaust or is a trickle
normal?

Is it worth removing & cleaning the exhaust manifold?

Hi John

The MD6 does not use a vast amount of cooling water and a trickle is a
better description than a torrent for the MD6.

Always a good idea to clear the waterways of the exhaust manifold but be
careful with the exhaust gasket as they are very expensive (about £50 -
$75)

Is there a Vetus conversion for the Md6a? I did one on my Contest 30 and it was simple ,cheap, and very effective.

The MD6 does not use a vast amount of cooling water and a trickle is a
better description than a torrent for the MD6.

Always a good idea to clear the waterways of the exhaust manifold but be
careful with the exhaust gasket as they are very expensive (about �50 -
$75)

Hi Steve and all.

Thanks for the reassurance - not having a working temp gauge makes me
a bit paranoid about engine overheating!

Would it be difficult to make up a new gasket for the exhaust manifold
by cutting to fit from "gasket paper"?

Also: are replacement temmperature senders available for MD6a - mine
seems to be missing!

Or would it be cheaper to just solder a "generic" transducer to the
engine block to engine block near location for original sender?

(The original temp gauge seems ok - just reads cold wnen engine is
running.)

I will see if I can find a spare sender in my pile of MD6A junk!

Generic type would do OK with a corresponding gauge.

When I had my first Vega (Toria II) without a temp gauge I never worried
about the temp but when I bought my second Vega (Southern Comfort) with
a working gauge I just kept checking it every 30 seconds!! Found it much
better when the gauge didnt work!

Steve, Just wondered if you were getting my mail or if I am being blackballed because of the worm Yahoo users suddenly found attached their mail. My computer has been completely checked out and is not indicating the presence of any adware ,worms, or viruses. I employ "Stopsign" monthly for protection and although Yahoo users encountered the presence of unwelcome "attachments" as I did, my computer is as clean as they come. My last two messages to the group site went unanswered which I find unusual. I had inquired about the conversion of the md6a to a vetus exhaust system and earlier posted a request for an engine intrument panel or replacement for same engine. Hi Pat

I see your message loud and clear. I have been up to my ears in the last
few days (building a house which is taking all my time and even more of
my money!).

Changing to a Vetus Wet exhaust is pretty starightforward. You need an
LP40 waterlock, some exhaust hose (40mm 4 metres) and a few jubilee

I have received a coupple of emails in teh last few days that were
completely blank so it may have been you and my Antivirus cleaned it up
of message and sender!

I have made a fe winstrument panels for the MD6A out of traffolyte, I

Hi Steve.

Looking at my exhaust manifold I see some kind of orange gunge around
the edges - maybe a prev owner used instead of the metal gasket?

Why should it be necessary to use metal gasket - surely pressures are
not that high?

What about Sikasil or similar? (Maybe the "orange gunge"?)

Hi John

Only times I have checked and cleaned the manifold I have replaced the
metal gasket. The temperatues are very high and paper would not last.
Obviously the previous owner has some special gunk instead of the gasket
or as well as the gasket. I cant really comment as I dont know what this
orange gunge is or Sikasil. Sorry

Can you describe what I will see when I remove manifold cover?

Is there a maze of water channels?

Presumably gasket has to be cut to fit the lit?

A friend suggested using thin copper sheet - cut to fit?

BTW if you do find a temp sender for MD6A I'd be very grateful,

Hi John

The manifold is held on by four long bolts, careful when you ease the
manifold off, dont wreck the gasket. You will see water channels and
exhaust channels, clean the lot, flush with water then you will see the
difference. Doesnt take too long to do if it is blocked.

Dont know about copper sheet. Talk to car repair people as I am sure
they will have some gunk you can use, it is only a small diesel engine.

If all else fails then you can obtain a gasket from Keyparts in Watford
in the UK but they are not cheap! Best to use some equivalent gunk.
