We'll here's mud in _my_ eye . what I _meant_ to say was..... oh never mind,... you get it to access the nut you'll have to shinny up into the torpedo tube (aka berth), from the cabin, to reach the nuts. having someone up top with a phillips screwdriver will of course be required also. What line size jib sheets do you have on the boat now? should be 3/8, as smaller may not "jam" as well. hopefully you're replacing with another self jamming horn cleat? I love those things on mine. so much so that I replaced the non jamming ones on my Mac with them also. If worse comes to worse, and you just have to sail before replacement is possible, you can always run the sheet across the cockpit to the opposite side cleat for a day .

Thanks Russ. Even though I'm not too wide, there's no way I could move toward the stern in the "torpedo tube" even if I weren't a claustrophobe. That tube is narrow, and way longer than my arm. Right now I'm thinking of sawing the screw out, and drilling new holes for the new cleat. But need to figure out how far away to drill. I want the new mechanism to hold, even before I do the glass repair on the old hole. Jib sheets are <3/8, and new cleat is the same size as the old. I'm a bit ignorant about self-jamming horn cleats. The Harken 150 Cam-Matic cleat I bought is the same size as the old one.

really? I feel in better shape now , as I'm 67 yr , 6'2 , 220lb and I've been in there several times . not fun. but doable. even if you cut off the old bolts you'll still need to go in there to place a backing plate and tighten the new hardware for your harken cleat. screws into the glass just will not do the trick for long. the stock Vic self jamming horn cleat looks like the pic: the wedge shape "foot" of the one end grabs the sheet well with just one quick wrap, so is very quick to use, but the cam-matic will also work well for you I suspect.

Even if you used a hack to saw the old bolt off, you would still need to get to the back to hold the new nut. I'm guessing if you squeezed down the lazarette berth, you would see the backing plate and nut for your jib cleat. Borrow someones 9-year old kid and offer $5 to slide on down there with a vice-grip and hold the nut for you while you back out the bolts.

Good point. Know any 9-year old kids in Minneapolis?

The Beneteau cleats have the bolt cast into the cleat. Nice.
