McLube…….. McLeak?

Every time I get a can of the stuff I put up with leaking sprayer…… gets all over hands and everywhere else. Is this only my luck that can never get a working sprayer. Instead from now on will use WD-40 silicone spray with a flawless drip free sprayer.

And WD-40 is pretty much useless as anything other than a cleaner anyway. Good marketing, though. That's worth more than a good product.

Since my local marine shops stopped bringing in McLube Sailkote spray, I/we sailors here had switched to using WD40 Silicone Spray at 1/3 the price. Now why didn't we think of that earlier

Huh? That’s like saying toothpaste is cheaper than shaving cream, so why not buy toothpaste?
McLube Sailkote is a dry lube coating that doesn’t leave a wet residue or stain fabrics. Nor does it attract or hold dirt.
WD 40 is a wet oil-containing product that doesn’t do any of that, is a poor lubricant, good solvent-based cleaner and originally intended to displace water on metal parts. It’s also a good solvent for adhesive removal.

WD-40 is a great fish attractant. Just spray it on your lures and see the difference. Well, salmon fishing anyway, which is very slow trolling.

WD= water displacement. It will also get ink out of cloths.

WD40 is a BRAND. They make MULTIPLE products. Including Electronic Contact cleaner, cleaner and degreaser, dry lube etc. So all the posts referencing old traditional WD40, when the post clearly discusses their silicone lube... are pointless.

Since they make "WD40 Dry Lube" . I would likely use that over silicone spray, but would compare the MSDS with Mclube sailkote to see what is in them.

FWIW I haven't had Mclube cans leak, but I do seem to misplace the little hoses on any can design that uses them.. I often find them later and now have a zip bag with multiple sizes of them.

Thanks for the clarification on the WD40 brand and the many different products.....

With the McLube its not the straw connection that leaks on me..... Its always the spray nozzle attached to the can. Last can I got was from Defender. I'll take and upload a video of the McLube debacle next time I'm at the boat.

Expensive but I bought a quart can about 5 years ago after finishing a spray can. I use an acid brush to apply. I have in mast furling and store the mast on saw horses so I have access. I find it works better than spraying. BTW, I never experienced problems with the spray can.

The silicone spray is cheap and it does work but it also leaves white stains and attracts dirt. I believe there are other brands of graphite dry lube available available besides McLube. Am I wrong?

Graphite would be messy....

I've used this with good results. It is teflon based.

Edit: Don't breath the vapors.

This post prompted me to post photos of my favorite channel lock and crescent wrenches.

It is very fun when working with someone. If they ask me for a channel lock, I give them my adjustable end wrench and if they ask me for a crescent wrench, I give them my waterpump pliers.

I've always carried McLube Sailkote as that is what most local sailors want and it is a great product. Never had issues with spillage, etc.

no silicon anywhere on my boat. it's a varnish farm. mclube has never messed up the varnishing. silicon is a no no on sailboats with wood

I use the Blaster Dry Lube with teflon on my garage door. It worked great for that but leaves white streaks allover the place when it dries. I would never use it in place of Sailkote on my boat!

@danooxnard post got me wondering if those guys at practical sailor had done any tests. They have. The highest ranked "marine" product came in 4th place.

Elmer's Slide All was ranked first in 2 tests over the years and you don't get screwed by "marine" pricing.

Unfortunately Ulmer's Slide-All has been discontinued. Likely because the parent company was bought/destroyed by a private equity firm and sold off. I read a few comments from those in the piano business that point to a few options.

Interestingly, Candle Wax and Turtle Wax were in 2nd and 3rd place.

Since WD40 Dry Lube is a Dry PTFE lubricant I would still be willing to try it when my can of Sailkote runs out.
