A while ago there was a discussion about MayDay calls. I write my position down every 30 minutes so I don't have to look at an electronic screen or paper chart. The sailor in the sinking sailboat in this news clip did not give his but the CG found him any-ways and all is well. Listen here if ya like..........

At the CG site, click on District 9
Then click on the news/public affairs
Then click on the article about the sinking vessel
Below is a direct link if it works.

I do not plot my position unless the weather is really bad. When cruising, my GPS is usually on so I would have a position should I need it.

Hey,

When I am cruising somewhere I write down my position each hour as part of my log. If not, and I'm familiar waters, I think it's easier to say something like "I am 1 mile north of Mt. Misery Point" than "my position is North 40 degrees 59.35 minutes, west 73 degrees 4.556 minutes." Other people that hear you will more likely know where you are that way.
