maybe I should talk to a therapist, or a self-help Guru...

Only 2 weeks ? Ohh........ I see your problem - you leave it on ;) My wife and I have cell phones like the one you describe, but the one and only purpose is for use when we are away from a land line. Make a call - turn it off.... period. No electronic leash. We get Months on a charge :D
this is a GREAT idea....
in this fast paced, ever-changing, need-to-know, and want-it-right-now world, a person would have to be on a regular yoga routine while doing some serious soul searching to get far enough back to their roots to even remember a concept such as the one you propose....:D

I think most of the last couple generations of younger people would have a tougher time with the concept, as all they know the on/off button to be is a reset button....

Tunein, Turn On, Drop Out

I remember in the '70s reading Toffler's Future Shock, and deciding then to adapt to change so as not to perish. As I get older I have come to realize that to avoid that shock one can adapt by "dropping out", or as the currently known going off the grid. I still enjoy the convenience of the of my Smart Phone and the extra gigabytes of memory it gives me, especially as mine start to fail. But I also recognize the ability and choice to turn it off and enjoy the serenity of being out of touch This may be why I enjoy sailing so much. We went sailing yesterday and left the autopilot in the cabin as well as the Garmin. We didn't even turn on the VHS. We did listen to "Prairie Home Companion" in the background and it was amazing how much my sailing buddy and I had to talk about. I did snap a few pictures with the phone and I do like how they automatically upload to the cloud so I don't have to remember to back them up anymore. When I looked back at the photos today I noticed that they were all at the dock of a camera crew loading a ton of equipment on to a specialized boat for filming and none of them were while we were out on the water.
I am even getting used to this new puter and Win 8, my sorry old eyes like the idea that I can adjust the size of the print with just two fingers. I'm sure I will enjoy it more as I learn where all of the freakin' hidden menus are. BTW YouTube is a great place to avoid reading the manual. What I can't figure out intuitively, some young kid already has and has posted it there.
So while I still embrace technology I still enjoy the ability to unplug once in a while.
Just think if I live long enough I will be able to upload my consciousness to a supercomputer and live forever. Just think of the possibilities.

I find that I have two very different sides! AND, both make me VERY happy.

One side of me is geek. I have (at this time) two laptops running and 2 tablets, one Windows 8 that is off, and one Android that is running and used sort of like the old TV Guide. ;) And my Nook E-Reader next to the bed.

And that makes for fun when we are at our shore side place.

** BUT **
When on our boat, cruising, I like paper charts and eyeball navigation when close to shore. I do have a chart plotter, but days, mostly for millage recording. And when at anchor, it's reading paper books and almost NO electronics. I do listen to the weather.

One of the times I was happiest, was at a very remote anchorage in the Sea of Cortez where we spent about a month. NO HIGH TECH items! Not even my e-reader.

Good thread Lou!

I got one of those nifty weather stations from Costco as an early xmas present. It came with a fold out "quick setup" manual. I had to go online to download the real manual that explains all the bells and whistles.

The biggest problem with Windows 8.1 is when I catch myself trying to move things around my work computer with my fingers on the screen. :D

in the past 5 years I bought a new garmin street gps, a new Ipod touch and last spring a garmin montana 600, NONE of them even came with a manual, the manuals HAD to be downloaded from the internet if I didnt know how to run the device and needed the manual....

and I have just the other day figured out how to turn the "edge swipe" keypad control OFF.... it is soooo much better without the unwanted stuff popping up all the time....
