Hello Cal Owners! I have been looking at Cal 25s that are for sale and now have a line on a Cal 28 that I think is a very good deal. I am looking for any information on possible problems I should look for from owners of these boats. I know the possible problems with the mast beam and decks on the older Cals, just though if anyone has any other advice I would appreciate the information. Hope to join all you as a Cal owner soon! Craig.

What year is the Cal 28?

Is it one of the 60's/70's boats or the later 80's Cal 28 2? I have Cal 28 2 hull number 34 from 1986. It's a great boat, fast sailer and comfortable for the wife and I. If it's a Cal 28 2 from 1986 watch for leaking dorade boxes. They were very poorly done from the factory. They changed them in the 1987's and later. I spent a lot of time and effort fixing mine, but finally got them sealed up. The best way to tell if they're leaking is to drop the headliners and watch them during a rain storm. Other than that, watch for wet deck core aorund all deck hardware (especially chain plates). By all means get it surveyed by a competent surveyor. Good luck and let us know how you make out. -Smitty
