I can't find anything in the archives. Where can I get a wrench to pull apart my winches. They're starting to sound nasty...and need some tlc. Is there something other then a specialty tool that will do the trick?? Thanks as always, Jake

Use a screw driver & hammer.

Jake: If you use a straight blade screw driver and a hammer to tap the driver you can start the locking nut. Then it is easy to undo with your fingers. Be sure to create a containment area around your winch. These parts are hard to come by today. Soak all the parts in something like mineral spirits and scrub them with a nylon brush to remove the dirt & old grease. Use a proper winch grease and reassemble. The single speed units are very simple, the two speed are a bit more difficult.

One at a time...

...will provide a physical reference in addition to the Maxwell manuals that are available via many sites (huntertwentyeightfive.com within the Manuals tab, for one). Take pictures and note that when the manual states 'anti-clockwise', it means 'counter-clockwise'. Trust me, it IS possible to assemble a 2-speed winch backwards, so verify correct rotation before before cranking down the keeper nut (using Steve's hammer/screwdriver technique). I pulled 2 at a time (from a total of 6) last summer, cleaned and prepped in the shop, re-packed and re-assembled while hooked to a mooring. Re-pack is a bit messy, but manageable. Take your time and appreciate the difference you'll feel (and hear) in a properly lubed winch. Good luck!

Take pictures!!!!!`

That was the advice I got when I was eying the Maxwell winches on my new-to-me Hunter 31. So I had my wife standing over me throughout the disassembly procedure snapping away with her digital camera..... and it REALLY came in handy.... I put the first one back together while looking at those hi-res color pictures on her laptop screen. :) I do have to confess that even with that assistance, I still managed to put 1 of the 4 together backwards!
