I have a 1987 Hunter 23 which is a great first boat for my wife and myself. The boat comes with 2 Maxwell 14 1 speed winches. The starboard winch is perfect however the port side winch is missing the top and thus the line just slips right off. I understand that Maxwell went out of the sailboat winch business about 10 years ago, Does anyone know where I might be able to obtain the missing top part for my Maxwell winch? I have attached some pics.

Thanks,

Sean

Sean,

You can get parts for Maxwell winches from Allen Hutton at Hutton Winches in Australia. Earlier this year I purchased from Allen caps for a Maxwell 14 and two Maxwell 17's . His e-mail address is: winches@attglobal.net

Also, attached are the assemble drawings for Maxwell 14 and Maxwell 17 winches.

FYI ... the caps must be pressed on. It does not take much (I used the arbor of a large drill press.) ... but you will not be able to "pound" them on. You will need the even pressure (and predcise angle) afford by some sort of press.

Regards,

E.

Funny you should post this question and get a great response complete with a pdf! Thanks to both of you, higginss and egodsey. I have the same problem on the winch that's mounted on the mast. I also need to take apart and clean the two side winches. The diagram will help tremendously.

Thanks again!
