Maxprop pitch for the 410?

I just had a new Maxprop 3 blade installed on my 410. It runs beautifully, smooth as silk. Yard said that it was set according to (Maxprop) specs at a pitch of about 21. I get about 5.3 kn at 2500 rpm and that seems a little low based on what I've read from other owners of 40 footers. I don't want to be greedy but neither do I want to be cruising at 5 kn when I could just as easily and cost effectively be cruising at 6 or 7. Does this speed at this rpm sound right?

Call Max-Prop

If your yard seems to be taking a trial-by-error approach to the pitch, it can get expensive hauling every time to change a click or two. Call PYI instead. I have found them to be very patient and obviously well informed since they made the thing in the first palce.

PROPCALC

Hi David, I just installed a 3 blade feathering prop on my 376 and it took two attempts to get right and even now I want to tweak it a bit. Eventually I got hold of a proprietary programme from a very well respected prop company and this calculates the required diameter given all the relevant details. I would be pleased to give it a go for your boat if you would like to e-mail me the data. My ID is donalex@compuserve.com. Of course the information cannot be precise for every type of boat but it certainly worked for me! The info required is as follows:- Diameter, Laden displacement in tons, Waterline length, No of engines! Horsepower at which you intend to run i.e. max continuous rated HP for the engine, Engine RPM at this horsepower, Gearbox reduction ratio. The program then provides:- Boatspeed to be expected - I guess yours should be about 8 kts, pitch, No of blades, efficiency, miles per gallon, thrust, power to weight ratio. All in Imperial units - (lbs, ft , ins etc.). Sorry this is rather technical but all of the above need to be taken account of to detrmine the optimum pitch or diameter or number of blades. Sorry I do not have the time to give this service to everyone on HOW. Regards, Don

H-410 speed at 2500 rpm

Dear David, My H-410, runs in calm sea, side wind less then 5 knots, clean bottom, standard 2 blade propelor from Hunter, 2500 rpm : appr. 6.0 knots. I believe your current speed could be immproved. Daniel

My 410 with an autoprop does around 7.5-8 at 3000 rpm. I'll get 5 knots at around 2000 rpm. Bryce S/V Spellbinder

May need more info

Hello David, Thank you for your note. How is the engine responding to the current load of the propeller? Does the engine seem to be under-loaded or over-loaded? My guess is that you will need additional pitch. Please, next time the vessel is away from the dock, throttle the engine up to maximum obtainable Rpm’s. Let me know that obtainable number and your feelings about how the engine is loaded. Thanks and if you would like my direct e-mail, please feel free to contact me that way. kwoody@pyiinc.com Sincerely, Kevin L. Woody

I have a 2001 H-420.....installed a 3 bladed (18") Max Prop on my boat Oct. 3d. I get 7-7.2 kts (thru calm water, no currents, winds,... w/ clean bottom) at 2600rpm....(virtually the same as I had been getting w/ 3 bladed fixed prop). Left Norfolk, Va 10/6 ... going down the ICW.. got to and left boat in Ft. Pierce, Fla. on 10/18. Max Prop worked flawlessly the entire trip... although I noted that my (gals/hr) fuel consumption was slightly higher (.2-.4 gal/hr)than it had been w/ 3 bladed fixed prop. I believe my pitch was set at 28... I called customer service and used the "letter" settings that they gave me. You need to add more pitch. Properly pitched the Max Prop should "load down" your engine at just about the same rpm as the orginal fixed prop did (about 35-3600rpm w/ the 63hp Yanmar), and your speed will go up significently.
