Here is an interesting question, at least I think it is interesting. What is the maximum size sailboat that one is allowed to operate without any kind of federal licensing (re: Captains license)? Sorry if the wording is lame, I just don't know how to phrase it.

Max size

As far as I know, there is no limit on the size boat you can own/operate without a license, as far as it is a private yacht. The operative word being private. Never heard of licensing restrictions for private ownership or operation.

I suppose that the insurance companies

would be the first to require documents that show qualifcation. Most of those are license type papers.

No, no, no...

The max I think I would ever go would be in the mid to upper 30s. I just heard through the grape vine (to coin a phrase) that large yacht require licensing to operate. It was more of a curiosity question than anything else.

You don't even need insurance if your

pockets are deep enough. To coin another phrase: all it takes is money.

As big as you can afford.

But it is not kool to own a 500 ft yacht and not have a proffessional crew to run it for you. I heard a story about the American Banker who rented a Rolls Royce to pick up his English counterpart at the airport. When they are driving down the road the Englishman puts his hand on the dash and was truly surprised by the wood craftmanship. The american perplexed asked " But have'nt you ridden in a Rolls Royce before?" The englishman replied, "never in the front seat"
