Hi i just bought a Hunter 270 model 1998 and it comes with a Honda 15 HP, but i feel it extremely slow, what happens if i put a bigger engine with more horse power, will it be faster? everyones tells me that it would be the same because of the aerodynamics of the boat, is it true?

I always thought that the difference between

a Hunter 260 and 270 was that the 270 had an inboard???? We have a 260 that we are doing the Great Loop in (4600 miles) we have completed 3100 miles of that trip.We use a 9.8 HP 4 cycle LKYusnret, John, S/V Baums Rush

Full Keel

I have seen a few 270 and they always had full keel and maybe an inboard. What's your draft. Nick

Engine for H270

If your boat has a full keel you have a H270. I believe an inboard engine was an option. If your boat is water ballast with a swing centerboard and a outboard you almost surely have a H260. In the latter case Hunter recommends a maxium of 10 HP. You risk damaging the outboard bracket and the transom with a larger engine. Some people have hung 15hp outboards on the H260 because the 15hp is really a 10hp on steriods. Yes, your friend is correct. The H260 has a theoritical hull speed of about 6.4 kts. It is very hard to go much faster than that because your boat has a displacement hull. About.com explains this more at this link: http://powerboat.about.com/od/hulls/a/displacement.htm If you want to go fast - buy a planing hull.

It feels extremely slow compared to what?

That info might help define your problem.

A 15hp is about right for the boat...

You could try a 20 but, you'll only be wasting fuel and not gain speed as you must be getting hull speed from the engine you have on it now. Could you be confusing your Hunter with a Mac which has a planing hull? Perhaps you can change the prop for a little more speed...but, don't expect much.
