Any one know the max number of people who can be safely carried on my ODay 23? Just got this boat and have 8 people in my extended family up for this Sunday.

It depends, I have had 8 people on our 23 for short periods of time. Last summer we were sailing in 25-30 knots with 8 on board and we did not feel unsafe. Bunch of people who were very into sailing I will add, can't remeber ever having more fun!
BIG HOWEVER, you must remember 8 people will outweigh the ballest you have below you. If your 8 people are willing to move around as needed and especially a few of them down low meaning below in the cabin as well as out on the rail, you can have alot of fun.
MAKE SURE YOU INSTRUCT them NOT TO RUN to one side to look at something, you have got to be on them about that at all times. When you tack make sure everybody knows there role and where they are to go as well as what they are to do. Lot of things moving on and above deck and 8 people make that difficult if they do not know there roles.
If you are motoring around, few people below, two up front on deck and one on each side of the mast will balance the weight nicely, BUT REMEMBER YOUR CREW HAS TO STAY PUT "for docking ect",
Life jackets, strict discipline, extreme leadership on your part and you should have alot of fun and remain safe. Loose control of that discipline and you will be in trouble.

The boat will float with 8 people on it. I wouldn't sail with that many though. The cockpit will comfortably hold 4; if you put six in there, they will be right up against each other, with almost no room to handle the jib sheets. Unless they are small children, 8 people will not fit in the cockpit. And even if you could fit eight adults in there, the boat would squat so low in the stern that I don't think you would get very good performance. If your guests are energetic, you could have them sit on the rail, but that requires them to change sides every time you tack. Depending on the wind and your sailing conditions, that could be very pleasant, or a wet and wild ride. I do not think that sitting on the foredeck is an option because of the sweep of the jib and the flaiing sheets. In short, unless a few of them will be below, I think eight is too many for an Oday 23 to do anything but sit at the dock.
My wife invited a family to sail with us yesterday, so we were eight, although all four kids were under ten. The only real problem was constantly watching out for the guests. My kids were very good and helped a lot to keep the other kids safe - really I was astounded by the job they did- but I will not be doing that again any time again soon. I don't like more than four on the boat, including me.
I sailed with six on my old 23 once, that was plenty. If it's a family event, maybe you should split it up and do a couple short sails, have a picnic or BBQ at the marina in between. I don't think sailing with that many people would be very fun and no matter what, someone is always going to be in the way of something.
