I have a Hunter 460 and am considering changing the standard three blade prop to a 3 blade max prop. Any comments, suggestions, what performance improvement might I experience? What sizing and other considerations? Has anyone done this? Thanks in advance Warren Feldstein

Check with PYI

The people at PYI (www.pyiinc.com) can answer all your technical questions. The two-blade feathering prop on our H L-35 gave us about 0.4 to 0.5 knots over the two-blade fixed version while under sail. It's about like going up one size in the jib but without the work. The boat points MUCH better and makes sailing more enjoyable. It's also quieter since the prop shaft isn't turning. With a more expensive prop you'll need to take really good care of your zincs and don't let them wear out.

Hi Warren - yes I did

Warren: I put a maxprop on our 460 last year. In my opinion, it was a great improvement. I don't have specifics because I made a few other changes at the same time (like get the right battens for the main) but it is definitely helpful. I was getting frustrated in my attempts to get the boat moving the way I thought it should. With these 2 changes, I was able to achieve real boat speed for the first time. Prior to this I thought the performance was ho-hum. Now I believe that the boat sails the way it should. ROwen

460 Prop

Dear Warren, Thanks for your post. The propeller for your 460 is either a 17” or 18” three blade installed on a 1.25” shaft. The 460 came equipped with four different Hp ranges and two different makes of engines. Depending on the running gear installed in your 460 will determine the needed propeller diameter. If you zap back to me the motor info I can get you the correct size. kwoody@pyiinc.com Please feel free to let me know if you should have any other questions. Hope this helps. Kevin
