Max outboard size for a Venture 222?

A friend that I have been trying to get into sailing for a couple of years now had a hell of a deal fall into his lap. A rarely used, berth cushions are like new, Venture 222 for $500. Trailer, running 4 hp outboard, just an incredible deal. Took it out on the water today. I told him if it floats, all the rigging is great, and the motor is running, there is no real decision here.

I looked on line and saw one of the advertisements that had been scanned and it looked like it had printed Max Engine size 30 hp. I know it is a flat bottom boat that can get into real skinny water with the keel up, but do they really handle 30hp? If it does, it must flat out fly on the water.

Brochure from MacGregor lists max size as 30Hp, and it has a picture of a 2-22 that if not on a plane, sure is trying to get there.. and you gotta love that original MSRP of $2995!

30hp that would rip the transom off. 6hp is more than enough to get to hull speed.

The transom is between 1/4" and 3/8" thick with a 2 square foot 3/4" ply reinforcement glassed in.

If he can find a 150 genoa to fit it will move out nicely.

Check this link http://www.venture.freehomepage.com/specs.htm spec says 6 hp for the 222 but I did see another spec that said max hp is 30............. does not make much sense 30 hp is overkill.

I had a Venture 222 MANY years ago, and it went quite smartly with a 7.5hp. It's WAY too lightly-built to take anything more than 10hp, and since it's not designed to plane like the Mac 26X, more than 7.5 is a waste.

I never got mine to sail upwind worth a damn, but it sure went off the wind! Had a lot of fun with her, often had her out when I had no business being out in less than a 30-footer, even lived aboard for 2 months.
