What is the max outboard HP that anyone has successfully put on a Hunter 216? The documentation says 4HP but that simply isn't cutting it in heavy tidal flow areas.

How about a 20hp?

it would be overkill.however it would push the boat nice.

A 20hp would be nice, but like you said that is a bit of overkill. Plus I would be concerned about the weight difference making the boat VERY back heavy. Thanks for the reply!

2 things could happen

with a motor that big on a boat that size: 1. you will find that you are travelling around with the bow in the air 2. You may find your boat gets shorter as your transome is pushed forward :) A displacement hull will only go at its hull speed ( except for some surfing down waves etc) unless you can figure out how to make it plane. A bit extra hp is nice for tides, currents and wind but I have been pushing a San Juan 24 at hull speed with an ancient Johnson 6 for 15 years now. In fact I would guess at least one of those horses has died of old age. I would look for a nice light weight 5-6 hp.

5hp on a Hunter 240

i've got a 5hp on a Hunter 240. I've not had it into any strong currents but it does pretty good. I think the documentation max relates to the weight of the motor possibly tearing the motor mount out of the back of your boat due to higher torque/hanging motor weight. Ken

5-6 hp

Maybe it is just my motor. It is a 4hp Nissan (I didn't even realize they made outboards..) and on more than one occasion it has been a let down. Anyway I am thinking a 5-6 hp would be good.. Something with a bit more power but not too much extra weight. Thanks !

Since I had the opportunity to sail the prototype and many more after that, here are my thoughts. First, the 20 hp idea is "NUTS" plus the outboard motor bracket is not rated for that. Maximum is 5 hp but a 4 hp will do fine in all types of weather and seas whether on a lake, sound or ocean. As for the Nissan 4 hp, first it is actually built by Tohatsu and that is my suggested motor. As for the problem with the motor by one author, it does not tell me what is going on. If the motor does not run very well, then take the carburetor off and completely clean it as it is probably gummed up and the flow thru the jets has been cut off. Solution for that is to let the fuel run out of the carburetor by letting the engine run until there is no more fuel. Whether 2 or 4 stoke, gas is an oil by product and will gumm up any carb if gas is left for long periods of time in the carb particulay during winter.

You asked for the biggest.

I had a 15 hp electric start Merc on my 23 ft sailboat and it was great. As a 9.9 and a 15 are basically the same engine. The extra 5 hp gives you that extra push when you need it. You can get by with a 4 or 5 however, they are pretty lame if you want some speed getting back to port or through a storm.

Max Outboard

If Hunter says 4 HP is the max there it's probably because they don't want you ripping the transom off your boat....:)

Different prop ?

Would it be possible to change your prop so you get the performance you want, speed or more torque ? Cheaper than another motor. Glenn

9.9 hp outboard on an H216

I use a 9.9 2-stroke primarily because it was practically brand new and I got it for free! I have an earlier H216 and Hunter told me personally that the outboard motor mount is way overbuilt and could probably handle a 25 hp motor (which is silly of course). My 9.9 can almost make the boat plane. Pushes it at hull speed at 1/2 throttle.

15 HP Motor

Hi everyone on the vessel information sticker it says 15 HP MAX for the 2004 model. I have a 4 HP Yamaha and have had problems twice in high winds (15+ kt), waves (2-3 ft Chesapeake chop), and tidal currents. Conditions I probably should not have been out in anyways. I would have to say though that my 4 HP is tight in terms of tilting up/etc. Not knowing the size of a 15 HP, I would wonder about the space constraints. HTH...
