Max Height for Bimini on O'Day 28

OK, so I intend to make my bimini as large as reasonably possible. I intend to mount it outside of the cowling on the flat deck, or on the side of the cowling, but may have to put it on the top of the cowling. It looks like I may need to move the mainsail track to over the entryway, no biggie, and I have a single backstay, which I am not sure the best way to handle that. Butt up to it, or try to put a hole in the bimini, which might complicate storage.

Trying to fit a 95" fore and aft with a 91" to 103" width, with a ht of 54".

Anyone who has been through this I would love to hear from.

Very nice indeed. Do you happen to know the clearance between the bottom of the boom and the cockpit floor, or cowling or any point? I think I am adding a zipper for the single backstay from the side plus a clear vinyl window, say 12 or 16" square.

I have a full Bimini with dodger and a 230 watt solar panel on mine. I also have a split backstay
I see you have moved the traveler to the cabin top. Have you had any issues with doing that? I would like to do that but am concerned about the mid-boom attachment point for the main sheet.

None and this boat has bee configured like this for a longtime. I do have backing plates on the inside of the salon and I believe it's solid core there anyway. I did make a mod where the core was rotted below my winches

I can try and get some dimensions for you.

Wow, lovely boat. So, how tall is your bimini? And when you store it, where does it lie in reference to the 2 backstays? Who made your dodger? The boom traveler, does it cause any problems or interference? Thanks for the pics and assistance. Oh, is that an Air Conditioner I saw in the starboard profile pic? Tell me about it.

Thanks,

Bill

Never measured it really, but i guess i can this weekend, i am 6foot tall and i guess there is about 4 to 5 inches above me. yes that is a cruiseair 7k hatch air unit, i use it in the summer to try to keep cool.

i have never taken the bimini or doger down, boat stays in the water year round here on hilton head, this was all installed back in 2008 by Carolina canvas.

OK, so according to sailor Waltz there is about 5' 10" at the wheel and according to sailor Euphoria, there is 6' 3 or 4". Euphoria has a 1983 O'Day 28 and not sure of the Waltz age. Mine is from 1979, hull number 7, I believe. So. I will assume they have different boom mountings? And I will have to wait a week to measure. LOL

Mine is an 82. I measured what its at now. It could be made a little taller I suppose. My traveller is on top of the salon now so my bimini and dodger are one peice. His is split so it could be taller because he's clearing the boom since his appears to still be in front of the companion way. I'm only 5'-8" so mine is perfect for me.

Cool, and thanks. I am planning on moving my traveler there as well. Metal blocks or wood blocks?

Ew, his boom rests right on top of his bimini, about 3 or 4" higher than yours. No problem with that, as you never sail with the boom dead amidship, right?

When the sail is up and the topping lift released I have about 2" or so of clearance on mine. If you like the configuration of mine I can take better pictures. It was made by a company down in St. Petersburg, FL prior to me getting the boat. I'm going to add side panels at some point, zippers are all there for them.

Great on the pictures. I am planning on going as wide as I can, planning on mounting on the outer deck either inside the rail or just outside of it. Oh, how big is your sail window? Just clear vinyl or plexiglass?

The window is about 10x10 but needs to be replaced. its clear vinyl. When not in use the PO didn't put the cover back down so it is sun damaged. The only consideration you need to have with making it to wide is being able to walk around it. Mine works pretty well although in a downpour water comes inside a bit. This is where the side panels are going to come in handy because I'll be able to roll them down and snap them in place and keep the water out.

The front windows on the dodger roll up so that I can get a good breeze through if I want it. I'll take pictures of how this is configured this weekend. Everything needs a good cleaning (algae and mildew) so disregard the funk. I have a few other mods with mine in regards to the solar panel. The nice thing with the configuration that I have is that you don't get a ton of water in the salon when the hatch is open and its raining.

hey guys, I have a 28" Oday 1984 and I'd appreciate if you'd
send the width and length of your bimini(s). I have a dodger with front windows and roll down covers & might be able to attach bimini to dodger?

OK, thanks to all of you guys I believe I know what I am needing to order. I'm going with a bimini that is 79 to 91 inches wide (actual width is 84 with all poles straight up) 4 poles, 52" over the coming and 95" fore and aft. Blue, naturally.
