I would like to add OB with reverse and external fuel tank, but have to go to a 4HP of larger, new 4 strokes weigh about 58 LBS. Is that too heavy?

I have a 4 H.P. Nissan(Tohatsu)on mine and the weight is no problem. A 4, 5 or 6 H.P. all weigh the same(58 lbs.).When I bought mine the 4 H.P. was the only one that had an internal tank and I didn't want an external tank taking up cockpit room. It does have the fitting to add an external tank if you want to. The boat reaches hull speed at about 1/2 throttle so the extra 1 or 2 H.P. aren't required anyway. It will run about 2 hrs.on a full tank and I carry a 1 gal. reserve in the lazaret. The 4 H.P. is also the least expesive of the three.

Have the same 4 hp Nissan engine on my Hunter 216

I think you will like the Nissan 4 hp engine that Ken wrote about in his post. I suspect I have an identical engine on my Hunter 216 and have been very pleased with it. Routine maintenance on the engine is really no problem at all (i.e changing the spark plug, engine oil and gear oil).

Waitaminit... 4hp on a Hunter 185!

Seem like a 4 hp outboard is overkill for an 18.5 footer. I drove my H-216 for a long time with a trolling motor. I now have a 9.9 hp 2-stroke Nissan I got for free and it is overkill...I can almost plane. Trolling motors have obvious drawbacks: might be hard to buck a good wind or current, you only have about 3 hours of run time (but it IS a sailboat), too quiet, battery has to be charged (I rigged a charger connection so I didn't have to remove the battery or put the charger on the boat to charge it), the battery is heavy...but so is gas and a motor, pretty green, a darn lot cheaper than an outboard, can usually be used on lakes that prohibit any kind of gas powered engines, etc.

The standard is...

2 hp per 1,000 lbs. Most of the Precision 18 folks use the 4 hp motors, but some like the lighter 2 hp honda, or some of the older 2 stokes. I think the 4 hp is fine, but the weight is a bit. If you don't mind a little extra stern drag, and you don't mind lifting the beast, then it should work fine. The older 28 lb 3.5 hp 2 stroke is a great engine for that boat, of course you have to put up with no reverse, and a noisy motor. No right answer for everybody.
