masthead sheaves

I have a 1978 27' Oday with a Kenyon spar. My boat currently has wire to rope spliced main and jib halyards. I would like to change them to all rope, does anyone know if the masthead sheaves are able to handle rope? I know that there are some sheaves that will handle both, but in lew of pulling the mast, I thought I might ask if anyone has the same vintage and make of mast, they might be able to shed some light on the sheaves.

I think some of the issue is how much the wire halyards may have chewed up the sheave. And you can't tell that without looking at them.

Oh look! I'm answering my own question!!! I went to the kenyon website, and discovered they list their mast sections, which is the basis for finding anything else out about the rig. By trial and error, I determined the mast section #3756 is the one used on the Oday 27, and from there, you can find out the part numbers they use for that particular mast section...kinda cool actually...I found out the masthead sheaves are a part number K-198-10A. It's an aluminum sheave 2.5" in diameter, and it has a rope and wire groove...I can use either. It took me a while to figure out how to get around their website, and called them. The guy I talked to told me to figure out what mast section I had, and the rest would follow...Bada bing! Question answered!

And if you call Kenyon, they practically won't talk to you, but will refer you to the website. I'm still hacked at the customer service I got from them when I had to fix my mast step.

I don't know how your masthead is set up but my Z-Spar mast-head had a plastic or delrin sheave riding on a pressed in pin. When I replaced my mast head sheave I had to re drill the hole for the pin and use a stainless steel axle bolt and lock nut for the pin. I also had to install a stainless steel bushing in the sheave. According to Rudy at D&R Marine, this is a perfectly acceptable substitute pin for a pressed in pin. This is just something to keep in mind if you can't use the original pin over again.
