Another bulk buy - I'm replacing the masthead sheaves on my Vega. I have found a well regarded individual that will turn these out for $100/set if we buy in quantity. They will be delrin (acetal) outer roller with a bronze bushing inner - not generic off the shelf, made to the Albin Vega masthead specs.Take a look around and you'll see this is a great deal! Mine always seemed to work okay but I decided to inspect them anyway...glad I did (see pics). Even if you won't be replacing yours immediately, you'll thank yourself when the time comes. Sounds like a good deal. I had some made last year otherwise I would join you. My original ones looked just as bad as yours and started to groove the mast head box web. How soon are you going to make the purchase, Wisdom? I might want to get in. I think my sheaves are V-cut for wire halyards (which I don't plan to use), so it might be good to replace them.

Also, can someone please school me on this feature of Yahoo groups? Whenever someone posts an email address, only part of it is displayed - in this case, all I can see is "jacobtwisdom@..." with nothing after the "@". And it's not a hot link.How does one get the full address?? Thanks!

Gene - I'll be placing my order shortly, probably in the next week or so. The way it's going to work is each purchaser will pay the man separately and give their shipping details to him directly - that way I'm removed from the logistics of it.So it's okay if you decide you would like to purchase them after I have placed my order. Before posting his details, I'm going to order mine and verify the proper fit/finish, that way we can avoid the wrong hardware going out at my behest. Hey, Manning, are Viking's sheaves "V" cut, like I think mine are? (I have V-3360 if you recall, so our boats are literally sisters.) I JUST got around to raising the mast last week, so now I can't check to see if I'm remembering my sheaves correctly. And I'm sure Jacob will pipe back up shortly ... but the plan is, he's going to order the first set of sheaves, make sure they fit properly, then put us in touch with the guy to order our own sets from.

V cut sheaves are for rope/wire halyards. I chose to go with all rope halyards since rope/wire are considered old school. If you plan to go with all rope then you will have to have sheaves to match all rope (no V cut). Just FYI. cheers From: "gene_neill@... Right on, Tim. V-3360 had rope/wire halyards when we bought her. Like you, I am also going to all rope. My understanding is that rope/wire was yesteryear's way to achieve low stretch.

Update:The builder has done a significant amount of testing in the last couple weeks and concluded that for our sheaves he's going to use a plastic known as IGUS. It will last longer and is corrosion-proof. If someone prefers bronze I'm sure he'll still make a set with it, but based on the results of his that I read, I have faith in the chosen material. He's an old salt from Cape Town with decades of sailing experience in torrential conditions. If he says it's good, I'm inclined to believe him.My set is done, paid for and being shipped today. The total with shipping is $107.50. I'll report back once I have mine installed and verified fit/form/function. If anyone has other sheaves or rollers which need replacing, he'll turn them out for you at a great price.Jacob

I received my set
of sheaves – they were built very well, exactly to my
specifications and using the IGUS bushings (great stuff).
While installing
them I came to the realization that the tolerances on our masthead
sheave box (or whatever they\'re referred to) are not exact. Probably because of the available technology at the time, the
axles aren\'t perfectly straight. This caused two of the sheaves to
bind. Subsequent sets are going to have a step on each face, which
should eliminate the issue.
Our supplier
offered to modify them for me at no cost but I didn\'t mind making the
modifications on my own. I was able to sort out the issue by putting
each in place, and using a drill w/ 3/8” bit to cut away at the
inner bushing while spinning the sheave. The bind was very slight.
Once they were in
place, they worked great! They spin freely and have a very nice shape
to them. I\'m comfortable giving out the information for the supplier
now. Total cost with shipping was $107.50 for all four – I paid him through
Facebook (because it doesn\'t charge a fee) with my credit card. When
you contact him, he\'ll explain the options. So without further adieu:
