Masthead instrument maintenance

I have a 9-year-old B361 with Raymarine sailing instruments. They are working fine, but I have noticed that both the direction vane and the annomometer cups on the masthead don't spin as freely as they used to. Is there any lubrication that is required? How long will these instruments last? I've noticed that there is a replacement for this part in the West Marine catalog for $400. What experience and advice do you have for me?

I googled "raymarine wind instrument manual". Here is copy of ST60 owner's manual... look under maintenance. http://www.raymarine.com/SubmittedFiles/Handbooks/Instruments/ST60+_ClubHseWind_OH.pdf

Wow, thanks, Joe. that was very nice of you! It says "no user servicable parts" under the maintenance section. I'm guessing that a little spray lubricant in the joints of the moving parts couldn't hurt it. Might give it a try next time I'm aloft.

Well, thanks.... but why don't you call Raymarine customer service before you start spraying stuff on those expensive masthead transducers.

I had similar problem 4 seasons ago (Jun-07) with my AutoHelm/Raymarine ST-50, where I was getting low wind speed readings and thought it was a failing sensor electronics. That fall/winter I noticed that the cups were missing at the top of the mast. The yard had found them on the ground (boat was on the hard for the winter) and gave them to me. I had them retrive the transmitter from the mast top and brought the pieces and xmttr to the local marine electronics shop that handled Autohelm/Raymarine. It had simply come loose and finally fell off. When reassembled, it worked fine and the yard went back up the mast and reinstalled it. It's still working today. So, yours may be just loose mounting of the cup assembly to the xmitter.

my dock neighbour had slow instruments, took a trip to the top of the mast and discovered spider webs! cleaned out the webs & sprayed with a spider killing spray to prevent future attacks.
