I have a 1985 First 345 with original mast. One of my genoa halyards jammed at the masthead when I released it under presssure. I have been to the top of the mast and cannot fix it, nor determine cause of the problem other than the original white plastic sheave is cracked and worn and needs replacing and I assume the halyard has jumped out of the sheave and jammed itself somehow. Does anybody know how to gain access to these sheaves so I can unjam the halyard and replace the sheave? The masthead plate is welded to the mast and there is no access from the side of the mast to the axle or pin that the sheave rotates on. There are two chrome plugs in the top plate that might be covering bolts, but I couldn't move them from my somewhat precarious position hanging from the other genoa halyard. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

Perhaps it will make sense, having been up your mast...

I replaced the sheaves on our First 285 masthead this past summer. We had the mast unstepped for the process. If you are able to relieve the tension on the halyard, perhaps you could complete a replacement while aloft. I can't tell from the parts explosion, but hopefully it makes more sense to you... Good luck!

Thanks SoSound for the quick reply. The link you directed me to was a picture of my exact masthead fitting and so I now know how it all fits together up there. I have ordered two new aluminum sheaves and roller pins from Rig Rite (or at least I have asked for a price quote). Thanks again for the very quick and helpful response.
