Hi, Could anyone recommend a good masthead anchorlight? Seems like there are so many styles and types. Also, anyone ever use one of those LED type lights? They seems attractive as they have low amp draw and long-life. Thanks - Rob

Davis makes a nice unit. It is very low draw and has an internal photocell that controls the light. You can leave the switch on, and the photocell turns the light on at dusk and off at dawn. It also has a clear top so it illuminates the Windex for night sailing.

Although I have no experience with this type I plan to install one of these for the upcoming season. It also frees up a circuit in the electrical panel ;D

works really well. The automatic on/off switch makes these lights very convenient. If installing a new light today I would be tempted to install a Lopolight. http://www.lopolight.com/

Lopolight - not coast guard approved -

Note the fine print on their anchor light page. It has a visibility of .9 nm, and the requirement in USA & CAN is 2 nm. They do acknowledge that fact in their advertising. What a great idea though.

First Star LED Anchor Light Bulb

I bought the First Star LED Bulb. It fits your normal anchor light fixture. It has a photo transistor so it only glows at night and uses only about 80 ma. They used to called Deep Creek. Cost is a little much at $150, but you never have to change it again normally. Bill http://firststarled.com/

USCG Approved LED Anchor Light

I bought an Orca Green Marine (OGM) all-round white anchor light that I installed last Spring. It's great. Has a photo-diode to turn it on and off (and they claim if the diode switch fails, it'll stay "on"), and draws next to nothing in current. It is very bright, and I can easily spot my own boat from a distance by the slightly bluish light. They advertise it as USCG approved. At the following site you can buy it with the bracket, for the same price as without the bracket from OGM. (I have no affiliation with either of them, other than being a happy customer.) Craig
