I just acquiered a 28 ft oday sail boat. The mast is out because it appeared to have rotted out near the base. I need to know where I can purchase a used mast at a reasonable price or whether I can attempt to weld the piece that came off. I will appreciate any idea that any one may have on that matter. Thanks

HI, mark, I see you are from bklyn, is that N.Y.? I have a 28 what year is yours,is it the mast which is aluminum or the base plate its called the mast step plate. You mention its rotted? can you explain whats bad . Frederick Pierce PS any way you would need a qualified marine mechanic to see the situation and go from there-because the base of the mast is a lo of stress.

what make of mast??
who made the mast?? is it a kenyon spar or isomat?? Kenyon makes replacement spars that you can get (either from them direct at rig rite www.rigrite.com/Spars/Kenyon_Spars/4060-MORC.html or thru Rudy at D&R Marine in Mass. www.drmarine.com if the mast step (down in the bilge is corroded that will need to be replaced there was a really good article in the last issue of Boatworks Magazine which showed in detail how to repalce the lower 6-8 inches of mast down at the base.

Yes that is Brooklyn.The boat is in Sea Travellers Marina. The mast is laying down on the deck and the problem is that the lower portion of the mast where it is connected to the base is corroded. I have been tolled that I can cut the mast where it has rotted and shorten the rigging. The base plate looks very solid. I am not sure if a better solution would be to weld on to make up the rotten end.

I would like to thank you for your insight and information. I am not certian as to the maker of the mast. I will find out who the maker is and then proceed to checking out the names you listed. Thank you so much.

I seem to remember an article in the latest issue of Good Old Boat explaining how to repair the bottom of a mast that has had extensive corrosion problems. I don't remember the details so I can't say for sure, but it might suit your needs. If nothing else, it'll introduce you to one of the "must have" items for just about any owner of older boats, Good Old Boat magazine.
