Does anyone have any experience pulling the mast? I need to replace the wood spars with new aluminum ones. Am I right, the mast is stepped at the deck?
I have pulled mine twice. The catalina 30 mast is about 200 lbs and 40 feet long. Yes it is deck stepped with a few electrical connections that should have connectors. Make sure to inspect your mast step also when you take it off.The easy way is to have a yard do it for about 60.00 each way. So of course I said no way and did it with the local marina crane at low tide for free. If you have access to a crane that can handle the weight and is at least 15 feet high then email me at r_clack@hotmail.com for details on how to do this.If you are just putting new wooden spreaders on you don't have to drop the mast. If you are putting on custom JSI ones you also don't have to drop it. If you have the catalina retrofit ones then you will have to drop the mast since this also requires replacing the attachment of the lowers to the mast.Richard
I just decommissioned a 380 and pulled the mast. Yes, it is deck stepped. You don't need to unstep the mast to change the spreaders if you have a good anchor point to secure the mast (away from the boat)
