Mast Wiring

I have a problem with the wiring for the mast lights. I believe the connector at the base of the mast is the problem. Is there any way to get to the connector without lifting the mast. Has anyone cut an inspection opening near the bottom of the mast? I have seen some masts with an opening sealed with a plate. I know this will weaken the mast and am not sure it is a great idea. Looking for advice. Thanks, Gerry

Check out Fred's site for pictures of opnening

I cut an opening last summer and covered it with the plate.I had asked the same question and Fred told me he had done it. My mast was down and it was easy to do. Might be tough to do with mast in place without catching any of the wires or halyards inside. Sure simplifies the connecting/disconnecting when stepping the mast down. The link should take you to Fred's site and if I recall correctly, the pictures for the mast window were on the 3rd strip. Good Luck

Things to try

I had the Kenyon mast on my h34 and more than my share of wiring issues. I tried several things and made (temporary?) repairs to keep things working before I was able to pull the stick. Many of my problems were associated with the connector inside the mast which I ultimately eliminated so I could make connections inside the boat. Remove the boom and the stainless steel fixture it attaches to. On mine there was a blank plate that was under the mast sail Track. I was able to slide it up about 4 inches. This exposed the wires before they went inside the mast. I removed the pulley where the halyards entered and got limited access there. I was ready to cut an access hole in the mast extrusion but was able to get thinks working without doing that

Access in cabin

Gerry, I have a 30' hunter (1991) and my access to the mast wiring is down below in the ceiling of the cabin adjacent to the mast. It has 6 screws and a 1/4" plywood plate that covers it. I just reach up and unscrew the plate. This is where the terminal block is for the connnection points between the distribution panel and the mast lights. Very easy to access and repair or diagnose. Thanks

Thanks to all for the replies. The pictures from the link were great. This is how I planned to cut the opening and cover with a plate. This will give me the confidence to go ahead. This site is a great source of information with so many people willing to share their experience and skills. Thanks again, Gerry
