MAST WIRING INSPECTION HOLE

Has anyone cut an inspection/service hole at the base of the mast to access the wiring plugs? I am planning on doing this and then place over it a "retrofit " plate simular to the mast haylard exit retrifits on the Catalina 28's. If I keep the hole small and use a good size cover plate I don't think it will hurt the mast. Your thoughts will be greatly appreciated, Dave KDSSAIL@HOTMAIL.COM

Inspection Hole

I have a 78 Cat 30, there is an inspection hole in the mast about three inches above the mast step on the starboard side. The hole diameter the hole is oval about one and a half inches long and about one inch wide. No cover plate is fitted. Hope this helps
