We have a 27' 1977 Cherubini Hunter. There is a #6 Lewmar winch on the port side of the mast for raising a genoa. We would like to put a winch on the starboard side of the mast to raise the main sail (it requires a lot of effort by hand). Lewmar Co. recommends a #7 for this length boat and function. So far no one can tell us where to get the winch mounting collar or bracket to fit the oval Schaefer Spars mast. Should the new winch be placed at the same height as the old? Also, will it weaken the mast dangerously to drill 4 more holes for this? Thanks for your help.

Rig-rite has them.
Rob: Rig-Rite has the bases. We just got one for a H'30 in the past year. You will need to drill and tap the mast. Many boats have a mast winch so I doubt there is any significant loss of strength. You may be suprised at the price of the mount (nearly as much as the winch) www.rig-rite.com

I recently purchased a #16 winch off of E-bay. I will mount that next to the companionway on the cabin top. I will mount a turning block to an existing bolt at the base of the mast and lead the halyard back to that winch. My H37C has a mast winch but I want to be able to raise and reef the main from the cockpit. Total cost? About $80., but I waited a long time for the right winch deal to come along.

Mainsail winch
I have a '79-27' without a mainsail winch. There is very little drag to mine, this was a new sail in about '91, the previous sail also ran free which makes me wonder if maybe your luff tape is miss sized or frayed and causing your problem? If it has slides, they may be miss sized- i have slides and one is miss sized but i'm ok with it but wouldn't be if there were more.

Mainsail winch
First, reeve a piece of sponge to your mainsail halyard, use some detergent and clean your track. Then use copious amounts of McLube and lubricate the track and all of your mainsail slides. You'll be amazed how much easier it is to raise (and drop) the sail. If you still want a second winch on the mast, the ideal configuration would be to run bolts all the way through the mast from one winch base to the other. The halyards are external, so you shouldn't run into any problems. (Watch out for the wires, though.) BTW: Unless the winch is throughbolted, I would NOT use a mast winch to secure a line that's being used for a bosun's chair. They can rip out of the mast too easily.

Thrubolting mast
Thrubolting is not a good idea for two reasons.First you have two opposing curves looking at the cross section of your mast,unless shims are made up you will not have flat seating of bolts and nuts. Second you need spacers inside mast for compression forces, this meens unstepping to fit and install.
