My first year sailing, and loving it. I'm having a issue with my mast rigging? I have a 92, 30' Catilina with a tall rig, Hood furling jib. I have adjusted all my stays and shrouds to the recommended tensions using a loos gauge. Everything seems to work good under sail. My problem is when the sails are down and I'm at dock. with any type of brisk breeze I notice the Mask will begin to resonate in a forward and aft direction. It appears to vibrate about 1-2" creating a shuttering effect throughout the boat. the vibration is in the mid section of the mast with no movement at the head.It last about 4-5 seconds and then stops ,only to start again with the next puff of wind. Most annoying. I have had other sailors check tensions and everything seems to feel right. I assume wind resistance on the furled jib, and mast itself is creating the vibration but can any one suggest which of my cables needs tightening or loosened to stop this effect?

What you're seeing and feeling is called mast "pumping" and is common on some boats. My old O'Day 23 was prone to it, but my new Catalina 310 isn't. I think it is caused by vortexes forming behind the mast when the wind flows around the mast. Don't know how to "cure" the problem, but there must be some experts out there who can suggest something.

Thanks Stu for the link, seems to make sense. Will definitely give it a try. This is a great site, I have learned so much.
