Lots Written about Mast Raising

Chuck: Its not too hard without special devices if you have a couple of strong people, but I like the A-frame technique. Best to first read some of the info in the archives of this forum and in the C 22 National Association Technical Manual, see www.catalina22.org

Several systems here at HOW

Check the Forum Archives under "mast raising". You should see information including pictures and instructions on how to build any one of four or five different systems for mast raising/lowering. Most can be operated safely by just one person. Good luck. Peter H23 "Raven"

Gin Poles and A-frames are

You can find lots about various ways to put the mast up. I just went through this with my Hunter 23, and after all this research into providing the "power" to raise it, NOTHING made life easier than the "baby stays" that keep the thing centered, and a roller on my mast crutch to roll the thing backwards. With them, it's not much hassle with 2 people and extra leverage makes the whole job easy. (Does the A-frame serve both as "baby stays" and a leverage device?)

If your mast step looks like the one in the photo, you can use the Mac raiser. Blue Water Yachts sells them, and they can easily adapt the length of the baby stays for your boat.

Catalina Direct

Chuck, I also sail a C-22. I purchased a mast-up from Catalina Direct, and it works great. It is well made, and I also leave it on the boat for winter storage of the mast. It makes raising the mast alot nicer, and also lowering the mast as well. I have never heard of anyone not liking them. Look CD up on the web for price etc, or give them a call at 1-800-959-7245. They are on the left coast. Dale
