How do you secure your mast to the bow pulpit while towing? The reason I ask is that I used a bungee cord and snapped off the mounting plate for my running lights. After I JB weld it back on, I want to find a better way to secure the mast.

stirrup on the winch post of the trailer

I have no bow pulpit so I put a stirrup on a post in front of the trailer winch. I put a bolt and nut through the holes in the stirrup to hold everything down at highway speeds.

I use the halyards

I use the extra line from the cleated halyards and lash the mast to the bow pulpit. I then run a bungee around the lashing.

Use a 2 by 8 as Shown

I used a 2 X 8 with 2 x 4 on top and 1' stock below. All glued and screwed. I tie it with a line down to the pulpit.

I use a piece of 2 x 4

Catalina Direct shows a picture of a plastic piece that is manufactured to fit onto the curved top of a bow pulpit, with grooves, and a recess to lay the mast into. I took a piece of 2x4, laid it on the bow pulpit, drew lines where the wood made contact with the bow pulpit, and cut it to be just a wee bit longer. I cut another piece of 2x4 to screw onto the bottom, that would fit inside of the bow pulpit. I then cut two short pieces on an angle to make a cradle for the mast, and screwed them onto the top side. I drilled several 1/2" holes to allow me to securly pass a short line thru and tie the boards to the pulpit, and the mast to the boards. It gets stored in the garage after I've raised the mast.

The only thing I can add

is a piece of carpet for padding.

Floating throw cushion

The vinyl covered floating throw cushions work well. Under mast, over pulpit. Tie down with one of your docking lines.

I use a dock line

And tie off on the bow cleats. I would NEVER bungie cords to tie down anything I wanted to keep. Tom s/v Gaia

great advice!

Thanks everyone! I think I've got some old carpet samples that would make perfect padding, and tying to the cleats will prevent me from having to remount the lights every time I hit a bump.

You don't mention the boat model. Not sure I understand the problem. If the mast fits into the pulpit it is pretty heavy and should not move around much. I bungie the mast to the pulpit with a couple of bungies as shown here. The pulpit is affixed to the boat and seemes pretty strong to me.

Your pulpit has a built in cradle

George

We unlucky others don't, and have to improvise.

Mine's a Hunter 22. The bow pulpit is dipped like yours, but I wanted to be sure it wouldn't go anywhere while I'm trailering. The main problem I had is that the mounting bracket for my bow light snapped off. I'll get a picture of it in a couple of days when it stops raining.
