I just bought a 1980 O'Day Daysailor II. The boat needs mostly a good cleaning and some TLC. There is one structural problem however. The cuddy cabin bilge deck is cracked and lifted about 3/8" just forward of the shoe that the mast rests in. I dropped a plumb bob from the cuddy deck and noticed that the shoe was mounted about 3/8" to port of the centerline. I haven't done the math, but this would certainly make the mast tilt to starboard a few inches at the top. I cut a 16"x16" section of the cuddy deck out to see the problem underneath. What I found was what seems to be a jury rigged repair using a 2 1/2" PVC pipe sitting inside a 3 1/2" PVC pipe. This supported the deck just forward of where the mast shoe was mounted, thus the cracked deck. The puzzling part is that I found some filled screw holes, but no signs of anyone accessing the bilge area previously. My question is; What is the proper factory method of supporting the mast shoe from below and what is the correct dimension to mount the mast shoe? A measurement from the front of the centerboard trunk would be best. I would appreciate any knowledgeable help. Thanks. Mike B.
