In my O'Day 27 bilge, there is (was) a block of wood that apparently transfers mast support to the keel. Is there a known procedure required to replace this block? Recommendations on material to use??

Hello John,
My 78 Oday 27 had a Fir block (have pics) that was factory installed with plastic resin glue. The glue failed and the block slid which in turn caused compression (depression) of approx. 5/8". I pulled rig and raised the whole structure to as close as I could to original.
Mr pics of the modification will give you the best idea of the way I tackled it. Feel free to email me at: tflb11@gmail.com.

Does this look familiar?
Hi Joe,
Drilled a hole through the deck for new water fill and was surprised to see ply core. Location was about 8" outboard of upper shroud. On your boat where did ODay use ply vs balsa?

Hi Tim. The only place I found ply was at the bow. It came aft about 40 inches. Everything else was 3/8ths balsa. The support I made from 1/2 inch Okoume by cutting several pieces and using thickened epoxy glueing them together. I then cut a 2 inch notch in the front to support the beam under the head and wrapped the sides with cloth. The removal was using a hole saw and chisel to clean out the pocket. Then drive it in with a 2 X 4 and hammer with thickened epoxy coating the entire notch area. Then for good measure I had put a 2 inch hole straight through the cabin sole under the support base and filled that with thickened epoxy to eliminate the sole core from the design.

Thanks Joe. Nice job on your linkage. Oday should have done a better job on the step (transferring load through balsa core one example). They're not the only culprits.....my friends Bristol 29 was lacking any support between the pan and keel! This resulted in distortion of about 3/4" and I suspect was a one boat oversight. Couldn't find evidence that previous looney owner had removed it.

Back to deck core, I suppose they had extra ply when they did mine. At some point I'll replace the bad balsa coring (aft of shrouds) but for now I just want to finish the cabin and sail for awhile.
