Mast stepping

Good day, gentlemen

I have just recently purchased a older Newport 30. There are a number of things I want to do this this boat and most of them have to do with mast and mast rigging.

Still yet, looking at the bottom of the mast, I have no idea how to step the mast down. Now, just to be clear, I am going to hire a crane/forklift. There is no way I can lift this thing.

But I am just not sure how this mast works.

I would appreciate any feedback!

mast questions

looks like a deck stepped mast to me. If you want to take it down your gonna need a crane.
the mast is to big to try it without one. You cant really try mast stepping or un stepping in a boat much over 23ft I wouldnt anyway.

It can be done but you need experience in handling large, heavy, unweildy objects. A crane for such as a mast is not very costly.

Call some sign companies. They are used to handling large, expensive objects and usually own their own long reach cranes that are often idle. The have always been eager for some extra work when I or someone I know has asked them.

He already said he is going to get a crane but I think he needs to know what is holding the mast at the deck top ,there are holes but can't tell if some kind of pin or bolt is being used to hold it to the deck ????????/

With the four screws out (looks like you have already done that) and the sealer removed it should lift right off. Don't forget to unhook your wire run.

I appears that someone tried to seal a leak from the outside. When you have the mast down, you should remove the mast step and rebed it properly. There should not be any siliicome around the base like in your photos.

If you are having it done at a yard they should be able to assist you with the rebedding process.

Remove the sealant on the base, it loolks like silicone so a putty knife may be all you need for that. The deck stepped mast sits on its base plate which has a flange extending an inch or so up inside the extrusion. Put a block of wood on the deck next to the base, then simply lift the mast up enough to clear the flange and set it on the wood block while you disconnect any wires that may go through the deck. Make sure the rigging is secure to the mast then proceed with the take down.
