Mast stepping

I just purchased a 27 ft Catalina 1981. I'm a new sailor and don't really understand some of the terms so bare with me. I stepped the mast the other day attached life lines to eyes on deck attached fore and aft stay. My Catalina has two lines that turn into stainless cables and go to the top of the mast. I'm assuming that one of these lines is to hoist the jib and one is to hoist the main sail. Not sure. The problem I have is the end of one of the lines seems to be stuck at the top of the mast. Do I have to climb the mast to retrive the stainless end? Not sure if I'm making my self clear. I do have a mechanicl roller furling on my fore stay. Any information would be great. Thanks in advance Mike!!

Yes

You have a line to wire hallyard. The wire prevents chaffing when the sail is up. Some one has to go up the mast to retrieve this line. The next time you step the mast make sure both ends of the lines are secured where you can reach them and this will not ever again be a problem.

The wires attached to the deck on the side of the mast are your shrouds. They keep the mast from moving side to side, and you will probably need some one to show you how to adjust thes lines tho give equal pressure to both sides of the mast. It is called "tuning the rig".

Welcome to sailing Mike, and good luck.

Mike, one of the things that's neat about sailing

is that we all spend time learning. One of the important things is to get to know the name of the parts of the boat. This helps in asking questions. There are many good websites and books that explain all that. I've been suggesting "Sailing for Dummies" which I'm told is well done and funny, too. We just bought 'fishing for dummies' and if 'sailing' is anywhere near as funny I'd suggest buying an autopilot just to read it while on the boat.:)
