Mast Stepping Question

I have attached a picture of the bottom portions of my mast and "gin" pole (or mast stepping pole). First, is there a plug or cover to keep in the hole after stepping the mast? Secondly, as you can see from the bottom of the "gin" pole, it doesn't seem to be designed to seat properly in the mast. I thought there might be a small tool that fits in the mast hole and then the gin pole sits into that device. I was wondering if, in all the confusion in delivering the boat, the dealer might have forgotten to supply me with these items.

260 gin pole

Hi Bob, If you look inside your mast you should see a ridge in the back that the notch at the end of the gin pole fits on. Carl h240 Relentless

Mast Raisig, Gin Pole

The photo you posted looks correct. The gin pole is to provide mechanical advantage in raising the mast. The load applied to the pole is at the notched end agaist the ridge inside the mast. The hole in the mast should allow for some slight side motion as the mast goes up.If it were rigidly attached attached to the mast there would be possible side loads on the pole that could bend or break it. Hope this helps. Mike, S/V Sail La Vie 23.5

I use electrical tape to cover the mast hole and..

...the aft end of the boom which is open in my h26 Isomast spar. Made some birds homeless :>( alan

Mine is different

The setup for my gin pole is completely different from the one shown in the picture. My boat is a 1999. There is no hole in the mast. The gin pole attaches to a fitting at the front of the mast tabernacle. It appears that the configuration on my boat gives the gin pole more leverage and also prevents possible damage to the mast if the gin pole for some reason pulled to one side or the other. What gives with the difference?

Different, too

Our 2000 H260 made in Dec 99, has a different gin ple set up too. We have the holes in the gin pole with a pin thru the tabernacle. Wonder why Hunter changed it?

Seems they may have had trouble with the flux capacitor.

Difference in mast

The reason is, it is a different mast manufactor. Memory fails as I type to the names. I've had both on a H19 and H260 and like the mast without the hole. Jim
