I had pulled my mast last yaer to replace a back stay and shroud paint and re wire. Also have a crack on the mast step. I have ground the top if the step off to get rid of the rotten coring and the glass on the side of the the step that is loose. Should I glass it all back in or use 5200 and then glass it back in. I am going to use phenolic to biuld it back up, plus 1/2 in. because of the 1/2 in. I need to cut off the mast.

don't understand what you are doing, assume that deck/cabin top core is bad, and you are refilling it and covering with glass, but the 5200 part i don't understand since 5200 is a adhesive/sealer and would/could be used to mount and seal tabernacle after repair of cabin top is done. perhaps you could check with local yards about this before going too far in the repair.

think i understand, in the space between cabin top and hull liner, you are asking whether to put in a layer of 5200 against the wood before filling with chipped glass filler. would not recomend it, you could get the 5200 on the glass surfaces and keep new glass filler from bonding to the two surfaces, just pack the area with the mat/glass filler and then trim and finish after setting up. wipe the inside surfaces with MEK to clean area before adding filler for a better bond, some say, but won't hurt...

Fiberglass repairs should be made with...
fiberglass. Clean and widen crack, fill with West or other suitable epoxy and some fiberglass chop mixed in. After it sets, contour grind and lay a piece of fiberglass mat to smooth and finish. Color match to suit. Don't forget, only use 5200 on something you want permanent. Use 4200 for bedding. Avoid Life Caulk where it will show as it contains sulphur and stains after awhile.
