mast step

I just acquired a Oday Mariner and before I got to put the mast up I discovered that one of the tongues on the mast step was broken off. I don't know if this is used to assist in stepping the mast or to hold it in place when erect. Can I have this piece welded or are there replacement parts readily available. Looking forward to sailing this beauty.
