Mast Step

I had the mast dropped before storing my boat for the winter and noticed one of the mast step screw was slightly loose. I was unable to tighten it, I imagine the nut is just spinning below. At this point I figured some pressure underneath the step (small pry bar) would give the nut enough resistance to bite enabling it to be tightened. Wrong, I then proceeded to loosen the other screws. The long and the short of my question is, how do I gain access to the nuts. They do not appear to visible, and I don't want to just start cutting apart the headliner.

our nuts can be accessed by removing the panel at the top of the compression post inside the main cabin.Terry

H27 Mast Step

Greg, two of the mast step base nuts on my H27 (1980) are directly above the compression post. They actually sit in a recess made by drilling a hole in the top of the compression post. You need to remove the compression post to access them. The other two were visible just beside the compression post in the head. I removed my compression post a few years ago to check its condition and to also re-align the head sliding door. Not a small job but easily done with patience to find all the screws that keep things in place. Sorry no pictures of this work. Regards.

I too ran into the same problem last fall with my

27' cherubini. I removed the teak access cover adjascent to the compression post. It was difficult to access 1 or two of the nuts. Here is what I did....I loosened all up as much as possible and then gently lifted the mast step with a pry bar. I then injected West sytem epoxy with a syringe. I will know at the end of next summer when they take down my mast.
