mast step spacing

Does anyone know what the spacing should be for mast steps? I am planning to install fold up steps and need a spacing most people can use comfortably.

Thanks for any advice.

9" from step to step would probably work well. So, space the steps 18" apart on each side of the mast, and stagger the steps. Also, put in two just below the first set of spreaders and at near the top of the mast, so you can stand on them when working on the masthead and when looking for coral heads.. ;)
