Last winter I found that my mast step had cracked. I assume it was due to metal fatigue and temperature change as the boat was covered with a tarp and the mast removed for the winter. I took the step to a local machine shop and got a quote for $350 to make a new one. They said the piece could be welded back on but I prefer to replace it given the load that the step bears under sail. The part number is difficult to read. It looks like '83756 STEP'. My question is does anyone know if Hunter or an after market supplier sells these. If so, a company name and contact info would be appreciated. Thanks Steve.

Hunter 26 Lake Nipissing
Steve, I have a Hunter 26 on Lake Nipissing in Northern Ontario which is notorious for really bad storms blowing up in just minutes. Anyway three summers ago I was de-masted in 40 knot winds and (about) ten foot waves that blew up quite suddenly, I couldn’t get reefed in time. I had a good crew and no one was injured and minimal damage to the boat, some gelcoat chipped off and a tear in the main sail, but the cast aluminum mast step broke and was not repairable.
I cut a blank the same profile as the mast base out of ½” 316 stainless steel with a plasma arc cutter and welded stainless gibs to the top of the new base to accommodate fastening to the mast. I then cut 1/2” off the bottom of the mast to make it square and fastened the base with stainless bolts.
Total cost was about $100.00 and about four hours work. If you are not able to do this yourself I’m sure a local welding shop could make the piece for you in under an hour and a competent handy man could apply it for you. It isn’t rocket science but it does require some skill and proper tools.
Good Luck
John

try RigRite

You would need to verify which mast section you have, it may be a Kenyon 3756. Review the dimensions at http://www.rigrite.com/Spars/Kenyon_Spars/3756-mast.html
If that is the mast section scroll to the bottom of the page to see the mast step.
Phone numbers, etc are on the website.

For my Hunter 36, I was able to get some parts for my boom and gooseneck.
