Mast Step Repair

I have been reviewing the archives for other sailor's experiences with the mast step of my '87 Cat 30 flexing the deck. Most of the solutions indicate repairing the block that sits on the keel, which usually deteriorates if the bilge is wet. Apparently Catalina has a solution for this, but I have been unable to get a response from them on how to make this repair. Can anybody help me out, either by emailing myself an electronic copy, or by using other means. Help is appreciated. Ed

Deck Compression

Ed - There are actually two fixes, depending on conditions: * For the deck, the recommended fix is to remove the mast and mast step, use a hooked tool to pull the deck back up, and then fill in the void with epoxy. You may have to allow the wood core to dry out before epoxying. * For the block in the bilge, if the block's not too far gone with rot, you can use penetrating epoxy to arrest the rot, then coat the exposed surface with epoxy. A problem with this approach is that you'll never know how far your epoxy really penetrates the block. Catalina sells replacement blocks; again, with the rig removed, you remove the old block and replace. You may want to treat the new block with penetrating epoxy before installing, and you may have to cut the new block in half to enable you to install around the forward keel bolt. Catalina has good tech sheets on both repairs that they'll fax or mail to you. If you continue to have problems getting them from the factory email me direct and once I hunt mine up I can mail them to you. Mike Turner S/Y Amity ('81 C30) Long Beach, CA
