Hi There

I have a 1996 Hunter 336 and leaks through compression post. I was thinking on removing mast step cleaning the base and resealing. How difficult is it to remove once mast is removed?

I haven't done it, but ours looks like the step would come off with the mast.

Hi Ken ours looks like it is glued down and 4 screws holding in place.

It's more likely that a leak results from water traveling down the wires inside the mast entering through the access hole at the step. The cure for which is to renew the sealing material around the cables. What leads you to believe it is the step plate being the cause of the leak?

There is a tube that extends up a few inches, where the electrical wires pass. There is also a drain hole in the mast step to allow water to escape. If the drain hole is clogged then water can back up and leak into the tube where the wires are. I helped my buddy fix his by cleaning out the drain hole. I don't remember exactly where it is but I am thinking that it is forward of the mast. Use a wire to ream it out. If I remember correctly it is hard to see.

Good luck.

I have the same issue ... there are 4 drain channels on the step, they are not clogged and I have resealed the wire run ... yet I still have a leak under the compression post so I am thinking of doing just what you are suggesting... I asked for ways to track down leaks in the all owners forum and the best ideas suggested was to pressurize the boat with a leaf blower and paint the step with soapy water ... I'm going to try that first then make a decision on what to do..
