Mast Step Reinforcement? Mast step support?

I have a nasty crack at the mast step that completely cracked through the plastic outer layer (LURAN-S). I took the boat today to a local marine repair shop for estimates on repairing the large crack. The repair estimator told me that he could repair the crack, but it would more than likely come right back give the tension on the "puny" mast step. He suggested reinforcing the original mast step with an aluminum plate underneath to help spread the tension being put on that small area. Has anyone reinforced their mast step? Do they make mast step supports or reinforcements for the 170? Help!JCD

When I talked to Hunter awhile back they told me not to worry about the crack just fix it and he said there was plenty of support under the plastic to handle anything I could throw at it.

How long have you had it for, you the origional owner, you talk to a dealership about it?

Dale,So sorry, just now read your post. Yesterday would have been perfect! I unfortunately broke a spreader while trial rigging the other day in my driveway. I had a shroud that had a kink in it & when I stepped the mast, it bent it badly. I was supposed to have rec'd it on Sat., which it never came!! I will have to take you up on the offer at a later date. I'm also trying to repair cracks right now before summer fully kicks in. How was your day?Jon

1999. no warranty for an 8 yr. old boat. Not the original owner nor do I have a dealer in my area. I'm going to attempt to fix it on my own.
