I am looking at a 1984 O Day.... Everything looks fine except for the area around the mast step. Some fibergass looks cracked and slightly depressed around the step. Also a few spider type cracks on the surface. Below deck there are no cracks or deformations.... Has anyone seem this situation before? Is it cosmetic or am I in for a big repair bill Thanks and Let the buyer beware right ? Joe

Survey it

Joe - You really need to have someone epxert in fiberglass survey to boat to know for sure. Basic cracking I wouldn't be too worried about but if the area is depressed that's a whole different game. Might be nothing, might be a hassel. Almost anything can be fixed but you really need to know. I would definitely have it surveyed to find out. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

mast step integrity

A friend of mine who is not a professional boat builder, yet is a capable boat owner, recently had a similar problem on an ODay which he aquired as a second boat. His solution was to fabricate a tool which allowed him to dig out a significant amount of rotten core material in the deck area surrounding the forward hatch. He then stuffed fiberglass material into the void, and was careful to insert "spacers" of appropriate thickness to keep the layers from compressing under a load. He also made up a steel plate for the mast step which helps bear the load there. He's confident now that he has a good solid cabin structure free of rot. Depending on how comfortable you are with working with fiberglass etc., this may or may not seem like a good solution for your application. As in all these exchanges, I make no claims to be any sort of expert, so you have to judge for yourself. Best wishes as you proceed.

I like it!

I like the idea of the steel plate, I need to shore up my keel stepped mast and was concerned that wood and fiberglass would compress after while, as it has done. I'll be looking at this in more detail. Thanks! CapnChuck
