Mast step not secure help!

Reciently purchased an 1987 22' and noticed that the mast step is loose in fact the square headed bolt seems stripped as well as the sloted head bolt that holds the aluminum plate down. The plate is secure but I am concerned that both of these are not locked to the deck. Can I sail with this condition? Any thoughts? Thank you for your help. Terry

Terry, What I did may not be correct, but I have not had any problems. I pulled out the bolts and cleaned everything. I then bought a big tube of 3M 5200, filled the holes with it, covered the threads of the bolts with it, and smeared some on the under side of the fitting. I put it all together as tight and as straight as I could get it. It has stood up to some wicked thunder storms. God help me if I ever need to remove it!!! Good Luck, Jay
