The Perfect Solo Mast-Raising System for Small Sailboats | Tropical Boating
I have seen lots of different techniques and contraptions used to raise and lower the masts on small sailboats. All suffer from the same problems for solo sailors, and I recently came across a system that solves all of them neatly and for a fairly low price.
Here's the equipment i use on my 21. I'm 78 and can do it alone. Takes about 30 minutes up or down
I have a ginpole that attaches at the mast base. It has fittings at the outer end for the tackle, and the jib halyard.
Firsts pic is mast end
then outer end
I have baby stays that hook to the spinnaker loop on the mast, and to the deck by the cabin top
and a four part tackle for hoisting. it hooks to the whisker pole and to the bow cleat
I can sit in the cockpit and raise or lower the mast

Are you planning on raising/lowering by yourself? How often do you plan on doing this?
My O'day 25 has a two pin mast step that allows the mast to be stepped forward or backwards. There's a mast stepping guide from O'Day on this site that's listed uner "Owner Resources" > "Brand Specific Downloads". This guide uses the boom as a gin pole and the mast is stepped forward. On my 25 we had to use two mainsheets for extra length to lower it. It was easier than we thought it would be but we found out the hard way that the boom must have some sort of side stays so it doesnt swing off to one side or the other. In my opinion the "boom stays" dont have to be tight since they're acting as a safety line. Getting them tight involves a bit of engineering since the length needs to change as the mast is raised or lowered. Having them tight is nice but not absolutely necessary. Same thing goes for your mast. You'll need to loosen your sidestays before hand. There will only be a few threads left on the turnbuckles.
If you would like to step the mast backwards I'd be happy to share my gin pole design. Cost was $15-25 and 30-60 mins to build it. Anyways, feel free to send me a PM if you'd like to discuss some options in detail over the phone.
